Photographs of the Extraordinary

In this dazzling book of visual wonders, National Geographic reveals a world very few will have the chance to see for themselves. Shot by some of the world’s finest photographers, New York Times bestseller Rarely Seen features striking images of places, events, natural phenomena, and manmade heirlooms seldom seen by human eyes. It’s all here: 30,000-year-old cave art sealed from the public; animals that are among the last of their species on Earth; volcanic lightning; giant crystals that have grown to more than 50 tons; the engraving inside Abraham Lincoln’s pocket watch. With an introduction by National Geographic photographer Stephen Alvarez, whose work has taken him from the Peruvian Andes to the deepest caves of Papua New Guinea, Rarely Seen captures once-in-a-lifetime moments, natural wonders, and little-seen objects from the far reaches of the globe.

Treasured gift! I bought this for my 92 yo grandpa, who had dementia, for Christmas last year. Gramps had subscribed to Nat Geo mags for as long as I remember. He didn’t remember my name when I visited him at Christmas, but he treasured this book. He loved to look through the beautiful pages and he’d even sleep with this book under his pillow! He passed away this summer. I have the book now and when I look through it, I think about all of the joy it’s pages gave him 🙂

Great Photography! Great photo book with excellent photography of extraordinary places. It is inspirational to see the photos as well as to marvel at the incredible natural diversity we have on this planet. Highly recommended!

Children’s favorite Our family loves this book. Since we got this book in the mail my kids (age 7 and 4) ask to spend time every night looking at the pictures and reading about them. The photos are very eye-opening and give the kids, and myself, a new perspective on this world we live in. The quality of the printing and paper is quite nice as well. We have a lot of books around but this one seems to have captured the kids’ attention more than any other.
